The logo

The logo, depicting the earth with waves broadcasting from it, is a visual metaphor. First, it represents the primary role of the online encyclopedia in calling international attention to acts of mass violence: providing new sights into historical events, while exposing contemporary events to the light of public scrutiny, even as they are happening. Conversely, it recalls the role, frequently played in the media, of provoking or fanning the flames of mass violence. Yet another reference is to ripples broadcast by a stone tossed into a pond. This image reflects the fact that even the most localized occurrence of mass violence inevitably sends waves of impact reverberating across the globe.
