Harry Tjan Silalahi was born on 11 February, 1934. A close ally of Suharto, he was actively involved in the Indonesian Catholic Students’ Association (PMKRI Perhimpunan Mahasiswa Katolik Republik Indonesia) which he chaired in 1961-1962. With military encouragement, he and Subchan ZE from the Nahdlatul Ulama jointly led the Action Command to Crush the 30 September Movement (KAP-Gestapu, Komando Aksi Pengganyangan Gestapu), a body set up in 1965 that organised the anti-communist activities and demonstrations in Jakarta. He was also the secretary general of the Catholic Party and a member of parliament for this party from 1967-1971. He was one of the founding members of the economic think tank, the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in 1971.
